“In the twilight between creation and destruction, patience and control, Florian Kupfer’s ‘Unmasked EP’ emerges as a spider weaving its intricate web of sound.” Constructing a captivating EP with hypnotic tunes and nude loops, Berlin-based artist Florian Kupfer confirms his sonic exploration of the human condition with this latest release on Urban Legend Records (Barcelona/ Spain).

Released in a limited run of 100 vinyl copies, ‘Unmasked EP’ is a four-track journey into a personal and introspective sound, where echoes of electro and IDM classics meets modern production techniques.Remaining faithless to their curious spirit, Urban Legend have trusted in Florian’s sound, creating 4 tracks that masterfully develop a concept where the listener becomes a passenger in a journey into ourselves.

The Ep is also available in digital format and confirms the upward trajectory of the Spanish Label.

2. EP Tracks

Florian defines the work like this: “Each track reflects the tensions between light and shadow, between the hidden and the revealed, capturing the process of unraveling our own layers to face the truth within”.

• Track 1: Sidelined

Sidelined seems the perfect intro for this EP, with a broken beat and captivating bass and keylines, Kupfer constructs an hypnotic tune with a slow tempo that seems the perfect start to clarify what we are going to listen along the whole EP. The repetitive vocals coming from “the other side and its minimalistic schema sounds like the perfect intro for what will come later. An excellent way to start this reference from this Berlin-based artist.

• Track 2: Integrating the Shadow

A nude structure with IDM’s echoes and a nude beat loop reminds us of 90’s sounds of techno and IDM and classics like Reflex or Warp. The absorbent melodies reflect the artist concept for the EP: “The tensions between light and shadow, between the hidden and the revealed, capture the process of unraveling our own layers to face the truth within”. The track completes a side A with mastery, and a very good work of the sound and the structure.

• Song 3: Unmasked

The vocals appear again creating an atmosphere of mystery that explodes in a loop that becomes more and more complex along the song, Probably the track more focused to the dancefloor in the whole EP, with elements of trance and without forgetting the hypnosis and introspection that flies across the 4 tracks of the reference.

Slow Electro-Techno perfect for intelligent dance-floors, that guides the listener to explore the depths of their own being with their captivating key-lines and dark melodies.

• Song 4: Severed Lines of Communication

Hard and strong, “Severed lines of communication”, completes this EP in a great exercise of production. The soundscapes are again excellent elements of a track deeply looped and with that element of mystery that surrounds the whole reference. The loops are simple but effective, giving all the importance to the arrangements and the atmosphere and completing the EP concept in a very good manner. As the artist says “the EP delves into the essence of the human condition, using the spider as a central symbol that encapsulates the duality of creation and destruction, as well as patience and control.

3. Overall Impression 8,5 / 10

• Strengths and weaknesses: excellent sound and production as well as development of the concept around the whole EP. Echoes of IDM and Techno classics, creating a personal interpretation that gives to the reference an strong cohesion and a personal character with echoes of trance and hypnosis along the 4 tracks. Probably this same fidelity to the concept is the unique weakness of an excellent planned and executed work.
• A very good work of production that insists on the previous works of Urban Legend Records, one of the Spanish labels with more interest in this moment, developing a good task of curation along the 12 references presented until now. Kupfer sounds like a promising artist with clear references that match in a personal way, constructing a sound with great atmosphere, and classic techno sound echoes that the artist integrates masterfully.
• Overall opinion: A very interesting EP that deserves an 8’5 / 10 in our opinion. With a limited edition of 100 vinyls the EP insist in the personal vision of Urban Legend Records and positionates Florian as a very interesting proposal into the European scene to follow up his production work. The EP has also an excellent artwork developed alongside the sound concept by Canibalism Studio and T. Espadafor.
