First Set: The Premise and Expectations

Let’s be clear, Challengers is a long shot. The director Luca Guadagnino trying into a difficult sub-genre (the “sport movies”) and continuing his good career inside the Hollywood machine. Ball, set and Match failed.

Challengers is follows the story of a rising tennis star, played by Zendaya, as she navigates the intense world of professional tennis, grappling with love, rivalry, and ambition both on and off the court. The film’s premise is intriguing, blending the high-stakes drama of sports with the emotional complexity of personal relationships. For fans of Guadagnino, the anticipation was high. After all, this is the director who gave us *Call Me By Your Name*, a film celebrated for its lush visuals and deep emotional resonance, and *Suspiria*, a hauntingly beautiful reimagining of the horror classic. Guadagnino’s ability to weave together stunning cinematography with raw human emotion has earned him a dedicated following, and *Challengers* seemed poised to be another masterpiece.

Adding to the hype was Zendaya’s casting. Fresh off her Emmy-winning performance in *Euphoria*, Zendaya has proven herself to be one of the most compelling young actors of her generation. Her involvement in *Challengers* promised a nuanced portrayal of a young athlete torn between her career and personal life. The combination of Guadagnino’s direction and Zendaya’s star power set the stage for what could have been a groundbreaking sports drama.

First set Winner: Zendaya

Set Two: Zendaya’s Performance: A Standout in a Mixed Bag

Zendaya is undoubtedly the heart of *Challengers*. Her portrayal of a young tennis prodigy is both gritty and vulnerable, capturing the physical and emotional toll of pursuing greatness in a highly competitive sport. She brings a quiet intensity to her role, particularly in scenes where her character is forced to confront the sacrifices she’s made for her career. One of the film’s most powerful moments comes during a tense match, where Zendaya’s character must grapple with the weight of her decisions, both on and off the court. Her performance here is raw and compelling, reminding us why she’s one of the most sought-after actors of her generation.

However, even Zendaya’s talent can’t completely elevate the film’s uneven script. There are moments where her character feels underdeveloped, leaving her to rely on her natural charisma rather than a well-rounded narrative. While she shines in scenes that require emotional depth, other parts of the film fail to give her the material she needs to fully explore her character’s complexities. It’s a testament to her skill that she manages to deliver a memorable performance despite these limitations.

Second set winner: Zendaya.

Third Set: Guadagnino’s Direction: A Step Back?

Luca Guadagnino is a director known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to create visually stunning films that linger in the mind long after the credits roll. Unfortunately, *Challengers* feels like a departure from the director’s usual standards. While there are moments of visual brilliance—such as a beautifully shot montage of Zendaya training at dawn—the film lacks the consistent aesthetic mastery seen in *Call Me By Your Name* or *Suspiria*. Guadagnino’s signature style, which often blends lush visuals with a deep emotional undercurrent, feels diluted here.

The film’s pacing is another issue. At times, the narrative feels uneven, with some scenes dragging on while others are rushed, leaving the audience disconnected from the story. Guadagnino’s previous works are celebrated for their ability to balance slow, deliberate storytelling with moments of intense emotion. In *Challengers*, this balance is off, resulting in a film that struggles to maintain its momentum.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of Guadagnino’s direction is the lack of emotional depth. While *Call Me By Your Name* and *Suspiria* are both deeply affecting films that explore complex themes, *Challengers* often feels superficial in its exploration of ambition, love, and rivalry. The emotional stakes are there, but they’re not fully realized, leaving the audience wanting more. Regarding the attempt to abord a difficult sub-genre like the “Sport Movies”, the film doesn’t reach the tension required.

Third Set Winner: Zendaya.

Deuce: The Tennis Element: Hit or Miss?

As a sports drama, *Challengers* had the potential to bring something fresh to the genre. Tennis, with its inherent drama and intensity, is a perfect backdrop for exploring themes of competition, sacrifice, and personal growth. However, the film doesn’t fully capitalize on this potential. While the tennis scenes are visually dynamic, they often feel more like a backdrop than a central element of the story. The film’s focus shifts between the sport and the personal lives of the characters, but it never fully commits to either, resulting in a narrative that feels disjointed.

That said, there are moments where the tennis element shines. The film’s climactic match is a highlight, with Guadagnino using slow-motion and close-ups to capture the intensity of the game. These scenes are thrilling to watch, but they’re not enough to make up for the film’s overall lack of focus.

Match Point: Supporting Cast and Chemistry

The supporting cast in *Challengers* delivers solid performances, but they’re often overshadowed by Zendaya’s star power. Josh O’Connor seems to have just arrived from the set of “The Durrells“. Mike Faist and O’Connor playing her love interests and rivals bring depth to their roles, but their characters feel unerdeveloped. There are moments of genuine chemistry between Zendaya and her co-stars, but these moments are few and far between. The film’s exploration of love and rivalry could have been more compelling if the supporting characters had been given more screen time and development.

Final SET: Themes and Emotional Resonance

*Challengers* attempts to tackle complex themes and concepts, including ambition, love, rivalry, and identity. However, it often skims the surface, leaving the audience wanting more depth. The film raises interesting questions about the cost of success and the sacrifices required to achieve greatness, but it doesn’t fully explore these ideas. Similarly, the romantic subplots feel underdeveloped, making it difficult to fully invest in the characters’ relationships.

The emotional impact of the film is further diminished by its uneven pacing and lack of narrative focus. While there are moments of genuine emotion, they’re not enough to carry the film. Guadagnino’s previous works are celebrated for their ability to connect with the audience on a deep emotional level, but *Challengers* falls short in this regard.

A Missed Opportunity

*Challengers* is a film with potential, but it ultimately feels like a missed opportunity. Zendaya’s performance is a standout, and there are moments of visual brilliance that remind us of Guadagnino’s talent. However, the film’s uneven pacing, lack of emotional depth, and underdeveloped supporting characters prevent it from reaching the heights of Guadagnino’s previous works.

For fans of Guadagnino, *Challengers* may feel like a step back. While it’s not without its merits, it lacks the consistent quality and emotional resonance that have come to define the director’s career. As for Zendaya, she continues to prove herself as one of the most compelling actors of her generation, even in a film that doesn’t fully showcase her talents.

In the end, *Challengers* is a film that will likely divide audiences. Some may appreciate its moments of brilliance, while others will be left wanting more. Is it a sign of Guadagnino losing his creative north, or simply a stumble in an otherwise stellar career? Only time will tell.
